This is a terrific early daguerreotype in a case. It is a one sixth plate (1/6) which is 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. The subject is a well-dressed older man in a suit and cape. His cheeks are lightly tinted pink. The daguerreotype photograph is in excellent condition with blue toning around the oval edges. The case looks to be embossed paper on wood with a fountain or urn and scrolls decorating both sides. This case has a sheen almost like it is new with only tiny scuffs or wear on the high spots. The spine hinge is seperated and the case is in 2 pieces. There is a lovely impression in the red velvet on the inside cover. The case measures 3 1/4 by 3 3/4 inches. The gold mat and protector are intact and in beautiful condition. The mat is under a thick piece of glass which makes this case somewhat heavy. We acquired this dag at an estate sale. We were told at the estate sale that the man in this photograph was Wallace Holgate who worked for the Gorham Silver Co. This is a great daguerreotype that would make a terrific addition to any photography collection!
