This is a fabulous early jewelry or glove box made of brass. It has a terrific repousse classical design featuring cherubs in various scenes and poses. There is scrollwork and flowers on the borders of these segmented scenes. The lid is attached to the box on the sides with rivets. One rivet has been replaced with a newer philips head screw. There is a hinged lock on the front of the box that takes a small 'skeleton' key. There is no key with this box and did not have to be unlocked. The inside of this jewel box is lined with purple velvet. The box has a mark on the bottom side in the center. It is an impressed lion with an E under it and all is within a circle. We do not know the maker or any history on this mark. The condition is excellent with some light wear that makes some higher spots look polished and brighter than the majority of the box. The patina and finish are excellent and have not been cleaned or polished. This metalware box measures 13 1/4 x 4 1/8 inches and is 3 1/8 inches tall. It is a beautiful and unique box to decorate with or to hold that special jewelry collection!
